Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 11 AIL 1004 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Foil
Captions available
The idea
A foil is a character placed beside another so that contrast reveals them both. The glossary has no headword for it. A foil need not oppose anyone, which is what separates it from an antagonist, and the exam does offer the two against each other.
In practice
Contrast, not opposition.
Where people slip
The glossary omits this term.
