American Literature / Unit 1 AML 0028 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Image, Imagery, and the Concrete Particular
Captions available
The idea
An image is a word picture, in the glossary's phrase, a line that puts something before the senses. Imagery is the pattern such pictures make across a poem. Images work on sight most often, but also on sound, touch, taste and smell.
In practice
A word picture, and the pattern it joins.
Where people slip
An image can be literal and still work figuratively.
