Ambiguity: When Two Readings Are Both Defensible
Captions available
The idea
Ambiguity is a word or passage open to more than one reading, and in poetry it is usually deliberate. The exam handles it by asking which reading is best supported rather than which is possible, so the work is weighing evidence on the page and not choosing a favourite.
In practice
Best supported, not merely possible.
Where people slip
Two readings can be defensible; one fits better.
