Captions available

The idea

Plath was born in Boston, lost her authoritarian father at eight, took a scholarship to Smith and a Fulbright to Cambridge, and married the poet Ted Hughes. The witness describes an outwardly exemplary life above unresolved problems, some personal and some from the era's attitudes to women.

In practice

An exemplary surface over an unresolved life.

Where people slip

She died by suicide in February nineteen sixty-three.
