The idea
Roth's first book, of nineteen fifty-nine, is a set of stories the witness says satirized provincial Jewish suburbanites, and it arrived in the waning days of the decade carrying a certain alienation from his own heritage. Controversy over his treatment of Jewish life followed him for fifty years.
In practice
A first book that satirized his own.
Where people slip
The controversy began with this book.
