American Literature / Unit 16 AML 1526 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Roth's Later Novels and *The Human Stain*
Captions available
The idea
Roth invented an alter ego, Nathan Zuckerman, who narrates a long run of novels beginning with The Ghost Writer. American Pastoral, of nineteen ninety-seven, has a daughter's radicalism wound a father, and The Human Stain, of two thousand, ruins a professor over a misheard word.
In practice
An alter ego who took over the shelf.
Where people slip
Some readers find the work self-absorbed.
