The idea
Light in August follows a man who does not know whether he is Black or white through a violent Southern summer, and Absalom, Absalom! has two students reconstruct a plantation dynasty's collapse from fragments. Both make the South's racial history the machinery of the plot.
In practice
An unknown parentage; a reconstructed dynasty.
Where people slip
Both books argue the past is not finished.
