The idea
A sharecropper's son has to choose between loyalty to a father who burns his employers' barns and the justice he knows the man owes them. Faulkner puts the boy's divided allegiance in the first paragraphs and lets the story run on it.
In practice
A boy caught between blood and justice.
Where people slip
The conflict is stated early and never eased.
