The Lost Generation
Captions available
The idea
The witness records that young Americans of the nineteen twenties were called the lost generation, a phrase Gertrude Stein applied to them. The war had removed a stable structure of values, and the writers who came out of it wrote about people with no inherited framework.
In practice
A generation named by a novelist's friend.
Where people slip
The phrase describes a condition, not a club.
