American Literature / Unit 15 AML 1403 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Expatriate Paris and the Little Magazines

The idea
A favourable exchange rate let American writers live well in Europe on very little, and the witness connects that to the currents they absorbed there: Freudian psychology, some Marxism, and a view of the world without God. Small magazines and small presses printed what commercial houses would not.
In practice
Cheap living, and presses that would print anything.
Where people slip
The expatriates brought the ideas home.
