Carl Sandburg and the Chicago Poems
Captions available
The idea
Sandburg wrote long-lined free verse in Whitman's line, and his "Chicago" of nineteen fourteen calls the city hog butcher for the world, stormy, husky, brawling, and answers those who call it wicked and crooked by admitting it and being proud anyway.
In practice
Hog butcher for the world.
Where people slip
The poem concedes the charges and boasts.
