American Literature / Unit 14   AML 1333 short lesson, about 20 seconds

e. e. cummings and the Typography

Captions available

The idea

Cummings broke words across lines, dropped capitals, moved punctuation into the middle of words and let the arrangement on the page carry meaning. The tricks serve a fairly traditional lyric sensibility, and the poems are often about spring, love and individuality against the crowd.

In practice

A page rearranged, around an old subject.

Where people slip

The experiment is in the typography, not the feeling.
