Imagism and Its Three Rules
Captions available
The idea
Imagism, which Pound organized around nineteen twelve, asked for direct treatment of the thing, no word that does not contribute, and a rhythm composed in the sequence of the musical phrase rather than the metronome. The rules are a programme against Victorian decoration.
In practice
The thing itself, no waste, no metronome.
Where people slip
The three rules are a programme, not a style.
