American Literature / Unit 1   AML 0013 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Rhyme: End, Internal, Slant, Eye

Captions available

The idea

End rhyme falls at the line's close and internal rhyme inside a single line. Slant rhyme, which Dickinson made an instrument, matches the consonants and misses the vowel. Eye rhyme looks like rhyme and is not: the glossary pairs "good" and "mood", which the eye joins and the ear refuses.

In practice

End, internal, slant, eye.

Where people slip

Eye rhyme is spelling, not sound.
