American Literature / Unit 1 AML 0015 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Alliteration, Assonance, Consonance
Captions available
The idea
Alliteration repeats a consonant sound, the glossary's example being "storm strewn sea". Assonance repeats a vowel sound, as in Owen's "rapid rattle". Consonance repeats consonants inside or at the end of words rather than at their start. All three bind a line together and slow a reader down.
In practice
Consonants at the start, vowels within, consonants after.
Where people slip
Sound effects are noticed, then explained.
