American Literature / Unit 2   AML 0116 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Stream of Consciousness and Interior Monologue

Captions available

The idea

Stream of consciousness renders thought as it runs, with its leaps, fragments and associations left in. Interior monologue is the more ordered relative, a character thinking in sentences. Both belong to modernist fiction, and Faulkner's chapters are the American case the exam names.

In practice

Thought with the seams showing.

Where people slip

The disorder is composed, not transcribed.
