American Government / Unit 4   Gov 169 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Random Sampling

Captions available

The idea

A random sample gives every member of the population an equal chance of selection, which is what makes a poll's responses resemble the population's.

In practice

One thousand randomly selected adults can stand in for a country; a million volunteers cannot.

Where people slip

Representativeness comes from the method of selection, not the number selected.
