ACT Preparation / Unit 6 ACT 0516 short lesson, about 20 seconds
What an Introduction Does
Captions available
The idea
An introduction has two jobs: catch the reader's attention and introduce the writing's focus and purpose. It may open with a fact, an anecdote, a question or a conflict.
In practice
"Why do some city blocks feel hotter than others?" opens with a question that points to the topic.
Where people slip
An opening that grabs attention but points away from the focus fails its second job.
