ACT Preparation / Unit 23 ACT 2209 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Budgeting Time in a Section
The idea
A section time budget is built in three steps. First, take the section's minutes and questions. Second, subtract the time for reading passages, if any, and divide what remains by the number of questions. Third, set a checkpoint, such as where you should be at the halfway mark, and adjust if you fall behind.
In practice
Worked example: suppose a science section has six passages. Allowing 2 minutes to read each uses 12 of the 40 minutes, leaving 28 minutes for 40 questions, about 42 seconds each. At the 20-minute mark, three passages read and about 20 questions answered puts you on pace.
Where people slip
A checkpoint is a warning, not a rule. If you are behind, speed up on easier questions rather than abandoning a passage.
