The idea
The ACT has three required multiple-choice sections: English, 50 questions in 35 minutes; mathematics, 45 in 50; reading, 36 in 40. Science, 40 questions in 40 minutes, is optional, and every question has four choices.
In practice
English allows 42 seconds a question; mathematics, about 67.
Where people slip
A calculator is permitted in mathematics only, never in science.
