The idea
A bar graph compares a measured quantity across separate categories, such as species, sites or treatments. The height of each bar gives its value on the vertical scale.
In practice
Invented bars for three soil types show earthworm counts of 12, 30 and 7 per square meter.
Where people slip
Bars compare categories; a line would suggest a smooth change between them that was never measured.
