ACT Preparation / Unit 17 ACT 1606 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Dialect
Captions available
The idea
Dialect is a way of speaking particular to a region or a group. Writers use spelling and word choice to let readers hear it, often to place a character.
In practice
A character who says "I'm fixing to leave" is placed by her phrasing before the narrator says where she is from.
Where people slip
Dialect reveals a character's background; it does not signal an error.
