ACT Preparation / Unit 17   ACT 1611 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Sentence Length and Rhythm

Captions available

The idea

Sentence length is a choice with effects. Short sentences can create emphasis, tension or suspense; long ones can describe, or give a rhythmic, flowing feel.

In practice

"The ice cracked. She froze. Nobody breathed" builds tension through short sentences.

Where people slip

Ask what the rhythm does in the scene, not only how long the sentences are.
