ACT Preparation / Unit 2 ACT 0127 short lesson, about 20 seconds
End Marks and the Indirect Question
Captions available
The idea
A period ends a statement or a command, a question mark ends a direct question, and an exclamation point ends an emphatic sentence.
In practice
"Where is the gym?" asks directly. "She asked where the gym was" reports a question, so it ends with a period.
Where people slip
A question mark belongs only to a question being asked. A reported question is a statement about asking.
