July 1830: Charles X Falls, the Citizen King, and Belgium

Captions available

The idea

Charles X disenfranchised most voters and gagged the press in July eighteen thirty; Paris rose, the army sided with the crowd, and the last Bourbon fled. Louis-Philippe, the citizen king, widened the electorate and freed the press. Belgium won a liberal monarchy the same year.

In practice

An accidental revolution, the anchor says.

Where people slip

The July Monarchy governed for the rich; unions stayed banned.
