Captions available
The idea
The governing principle was efficiency, which is to say power; toleration came from the same impulse. He was no lover of freedom: press censorship, no democracy, and a Code that made women legal subjects of fathers and then husbands, a wife owing obedience in the anchor's paraphrase.
In practice
Obedience demanded of everyone, wives first.
Where people slip
The clause is the anchor's paraphrase.
