The idea

The exam hands you the Revolution's events out of order and asks which came first. The method is three fixed points: the Tennis Court Oath of June seventeen eighty-nine, the republic of September ninety-two, and Thermidor in July ninety-four. Everything else falls into the three gaps.

In practice

Place seven events. The Bastille: July fourteenth, eighty-nine, weeks after the Oath. August fourth and the Declaration: the same summer, after the Bastille. The March on Versailles: October eighty-nine, after the Declaration. Varennes: June ninety-one, before the constitution of that October. War on Austria: April ninety-two, before the republic. The king's execution: January ninety-three, after the republic. The Committee of Public Safety: September ninety-three, after the execution and before Thermidor. The Directory: seventeen ninety-five, after Thermidor. The order reads Oath, Bastille, August, October, Varennes, war, republic, execution, Committee, Thermidor, Directory.

Where people slip

Two of the anchor's phrasings differ from the witness: September ninety-two was the Convention's proclamation, not a constitution, and the anchor's calendar mappings for months other than Thermidor are wrong. The order holds either way.
