The idea

The exam hands you events from three countries and asks which came first. The method is to keep one fixed point per country and one shared war: Michael Romanov's election in sixteen thirteen for Russia, the Great Compromise of sixteen fifty-three for Prussia, the death of Spain's last Habsburg in seventeen hundred for Austria, and the Great Northern War, seventeen hundred to twenty-one, running under Peter's whole reform.

In practice

Place six events. Serfdom by law in Russia: sixteen forty-nine, after Michael and before Prussia's Compromise. The Ottomans at Vienna: sixteen eighty-three, after the Compromise and before seventeen hundred. Peter's accession: sixteen eighty-two, the year before the siege. The King in Prussia: seventeen-oh-one, the war's second year. St. Petersburg: seventeen-oh-three, inside the war. The Table of Ranks: seventeen twenty-two, the year after Nystad ended it. Maria Theresa's accession: seventeen forty, after every one of these. The order reads Michael, serfdom, the Compromise, Peter, Vienna, the war opens, the king, the city, Nystad, the Table, Maria Theresa.

Where people slip

Two of the anchor's dates are corrected on the witness and both are in this chain: the royal title is seventeen-oh-one, which the anchor leaves undated, and Charles V's abdication is fifteen fifty-six, not fifty-eight. The order holds either way.
