The idea
The exam asks about one hundred twenty questions in ninety minutes, from sixteen forty-eight to the present. Twelve bands carry fixed weights, the heaviest on revolution and on the First World War. Five abilities are tested: facts, causes, reading texts and maps, relevance, and conclusions.
In practice
No essays; a fact, a map or a passage.
Where people slip
The weights are approximate, the board says.
