Augustus: A Republic in Form, a Monarchy in Fact

Captions available

The idea

Augustus kept every republican institution and emptied them. His legal bases were tribunician power for life by twenty-three B.C.E. and imperium maius over the army provinces; soldiers swore to him personally, and the Senate became a facade that ratified his choices.

In practice

Sample question five: imperial government retaining republican features.

Where people slip

The anchor's "consul for life" is doubtful; he resigned the consulship in twenty-three.
