Western Civilization I / Unit 6   WC1 0501 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Rome's Site and Rome's Legend

Captions available

The idea

Rome sat on defensible hills beside a Tiber ford where trade routes crossed between the Greek south and the Italian north. Its legend gave it Romulus and Remus, the wolf, fratricide, and April twenty-first, seven fifty-three B.C.E.

In practice

The anchor: a legend, and important for Rome's self-image of force.

Where people slip

Treat seven fifty-three as the traditional date, not a record.
