Western Civilization I / Unit 5 WC1 0414 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Languages and Citizenship in a Hellenistic City
Captions available
The idea
Greek served state and elite, in the common dialect the witness names koine; Aramaic carried trade; local tongues stayed local, and kings rarely learned them. Citizenship became an elite mark holdable in several cities, no longer the polis's basic currency.
In practice
Koine spread as the lingua franca of the Hellenistic world.
Where people slip
Koine is witness-supplied. The anchor describes the language layers without the word.
