Western Civilization I / Unit 5   WC1 0408 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Ruling as the Great King: Marriages, Satrapies, Babylon

Captions available

The idea

Alexander kept the satrapies, enlisted Persian soldiers, honored Darius's family, and married his officers to Persian noblewomen in mass ceremonies to fuse the two peoples. Babylon became his capital. His goal was to be the next Great King.

In practice

The Persian system of governance taken over whole.

Where people slip

The Macedonians resented it. Fusion was Alexander's policy, not his army's.
