Colonization: Never Far From the Sea
Captions available
The idea
Population recovery sent colonists from Spain to the Black Sea, to North Africa and Sicily, always by the coast and never inland. Colonies grew olives and grapes, traded with Celts, Egyptians, Lydians and Babylonians, and spread Greek letters to Gaul.
In practice
Caesar found Gauls writing in Greek letters seven centuries later.
Where people slip
Colonies were independent poleis, not possessions. Greece had no empire.
