The idea
Jamestown, founded in sixteen oh seven, nearly died before tobacco saved it. Champlain founded Quebec in sixteen oh eight for furs. Puritans landed at Plymouth in sixteen twenty and settled Massachusetts Bay from sixteen thirty, fleeing the Anglican state.

Small and poor beside Spanish America until the eighteenth century.
