The idea
Viceroys ruled New Spain and Peru for the crown. The encomienda granted Indian labor and tribute with a duty of protection and conversion, and was abused; the hacienda, the landed estate, followed. A pope in fifteen thirty-seven declared Indians rational beings capable of conversion.
