Giotto Before and Raphael After

Captions available

The idea

Giotto, about thirteen hundred, painted figures with weight and feeling before perspective existed, the witness's forerunner. Raphael, fourteen eighty-three to fifteen twenty, painted the School of Athens for Julius II, Plato and Aristotle among the ancients: the High Renaissance's balance.

In practice

Three generations: Giotto, Brunelleschi's circle, Raphael.

Where people slip

Both names rest on the witness texts. The anchor omits them.
