Gutenberg, Mainz, and the Bible of 1455

Captions available

The idea

Gutenberg of Mainz, in the late fourteen forties, built a press with movable metal type, and his Bible of fourteen fifty-five, the Vulgate, was the first best-seller. Chinese and Korean printing came earlier with no evidence of transmission, the anchor says.

In practice

Fewer copying errors, and cheaper than manuscript.

Where people slip

The anchor spells the city Meinz. Mainz.
