Western Civilization I / Unit 11   WC1 1026 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Francis, Dominic, and the Mendicant Orders

Captions available

The idea

Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscans on absolute poverty and preaching in towns; Dominic founded the Dominicans to preach against heresy with learning. Mendicants begged rather than owned, lived among townspeople, and staffed the Inquisition and the universities.

In practice

Friars against Cathars; Aquinas a Dominican.
