The M-CaReM-AI Method: Defining Work for AI / Unit 3 MCM 070 review, 2 to 3 minutes
One Change, Five Lenses
The idea
A worked example, constructed for this course, takes one proposed change through the five phase questions, and shows where AI helps at each.
In practice
The library's director proposes letting members pause a Loan while they are in hospital. Under the first lens, the team asks whether a pause is a new thing or a state of the Loan. They decide it is a state, but note that the reason for a pause may need its own record for privacy. Under the second, they write a card, update the Loan to paused, naming who may pause it, for how long, and what happens to the due date. An AI tool drafts the card from the Loan's definition, and invents a field for the member's diagnosis, which the team deletes at once. Under the third, the Loan's Pack gains a paused state, two transitions and an open question about how long paused loans may last. Under the fourth, the team shows branch staff the change, and a librarian points out that holds by other members on a paused item must not wait forever. That becomes a second card. Under the fifth, the Loan's matrix shows that the overdue notice job, the fine calculation and the council figures all read the due date, so all three must be tested. The AI tool's impact suggestion missed the council figures, which the matrix caught.
Where people slip
The tool helped twice and erred twice: an invented diagnosis field that would have been a privacy breach, and a missed report. The method's frames caught both errors, which is what the frames are for. Without the Pack, nobody would have noticed the invented field was new; without the matrix, the council figures would have been wrong for a year before anyone asked why.
