The idea
The Gini coefficient summarizes income inequality in a single figure from zero, perfect equality, to one, where a single household receives all the income.
In practice
It compares the actual distribution against the line that perfect equality would trace.
Where people slip
One number cannot say where in the distribution the inequality sits, and two societies can share a Gini and differ greatly.
