Sociology / Unit 4 Soc 0487 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Front Stage and Back Stage
Captions available
The idea
Front stage is where a person performs for an audience; back stage is where the performance is dropped, rehearsed, or repaired.
In practice
The dining room is front stage, and the kitchen, where the same staff speak differently, is back stage.
Where people slip
Back stage is a region defined by audience, not a place where someone is finally authentic.
