Types of Societies

The idea
Societies are classified by how they secure subsistence, because the method of getting food shapes settlement, population, hierarchy, and nearly everything else.
In practice
A society that follows herds cannot build permanent granaries; one that farms fixed fields must.
Where people slip
The sequence is a classification, not a ladder every society climbs.
