The idea
A hypothesis is a testable statement predicting a relationship between two or more factors, written so that evidence could show it false.
In practice
"Longer commutes lower reported job satisfaction" predicts a direction and can fail; the data may show no relationship.
Where people slip
A statement no evidence could contradict is not a hypothesis.
