Religion

The idea
Religion is a system of beliefs, values, and practices concerning what a person holds sacred, found in some form in every known culture.
In practice
Durkheim defined it as a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, uniting adherents into one community.
Where people slip
Universal does not mean uniform: every culture has a version of religion, but not all share the same content.
