The overjustification effect is the reduction of intrinsic motivation that can follow rewarding an already-enjoyed activity.
In practice
Children paid to draw spend less free time drawing afterward than children who were not paid.
Where people slip
The effect appears mainly with expected rewards for activities already enjoyed. Unexpected praise behaves differently.
