The Pituitary Gland
Captions available
The idea
The pituitary gland releases hormones that direct other endocrine glands, under the control of the hypothalamus.
In practice
The pituitary signals the adrenal glands to release stress hormones after a hypothalamic instruction.
Where people slip
The pituitary is called the master gland and takes its orders from the hypothalamus. The name overstates its rank.
