The Sympathetic Division
Captions available
The idea
The sympathetic division mobilizes the body for action, raising heart rate and redirecting energy to the muscles.
In practice
A car swerves into the lane ahead, and within a second the heart is faster and the pupils are wider.
Where people slip
The sympathetic division is not an emergency switch. It runs at a baseline level all day.
