The idea
Lazarus held that a cognitive appraisal of the situation precedes and determines the emotional response.
In practice
The same approaching dog produces fear or delight depending on how the situation is appraised.
Where people slip
Appraisal can be rapid and unconscious. Cognitive here does not mean deliberate.
