Principles of Macroeconomics / Unit 5 MAC 0410 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Two Surveys

The idea
Two surveys produce the monthly figures. A household survey gives the unemployment rate; a survey of employers gives the change in the number of jobs.
In practice
The household survey covers about sixty thousand households, or a hundred and ten thousand people, each month.
Where people slip
The employer survey misses the self-employed, so the two can disagree, and only the household survey yields a rate.
